Boat Stand Safety

Logo Boat StandAt Lake City Industries, we manufacture many types of boat stands, including power boat or motorboat stands and our sail boat stands. Each type of boat stand is manufactured of the highest quality materials, with the safety of you and your boat in mind. Each boat stand is available in several different sizes, is stackable or nestable, and is tripod designed for the greatest stability.

Boat Stand Safety is an important part of boating. The following is a list of important information for your safety and the safety of your boat. This list should not be considered to be totally complete to all users of boat stands, due to the variety of boat stand applications. Consider these safety precautions along with any that you already take.

  • Don't use boat stands to suspend a boat in mid-air. Instead, use blocking or keel stands along the centerline of the boat to rest all of the weight on. Keep all boats keel blocked as low to the ground as possible.
  • Use safety chains on sail boat stands, chaining each pair together from port to starboard. This will help with stability in heavy winds or rain.
  • Never allow anyone other than qualified, experienced, and/or authorized people to move or adjust your boat stands when they are in use. Inexperienced people can be very dangerous to your boat!
  • Use two boat stands for each eight feet of the boat's length with a minimum of four stands per boat. If you own a sailboat, you will usually also need a V-stand to support the boat's sharply angled prow. If you have a larger boat, use extra boat stands to properly stabilize your boat.
  • Never allow anything such as ropes or boat covers to be tied to the boat stands. This can destabilize your boat stand setup very easily.
  • Use boat stands on firm stable ground. If the ground is soft or moist and you cannot move your boat to a firmer, more stable location, place each boat stand on a piece of plywood or other dunnage to support it safely.
  • In windy or open areas, be sure to remove the mast from a sailboat.
  • When applying boat stands, make sure that the adjusting screw is as perpendicular to the hull as possible. You want the screw to rest at a 90 degree angle to the hull.
  • If it is necessary to remove a boat stand, place another boat stand beside it first. This will keep your boat from destabilizing.
  • Replace any boat stand that is damaged or rusted badly, and keep all of the screws greased on each boat stand.
  • Do not weld or modify boat stands! They are constructed with your safety and the safety of your boat in mind, and extra welding can weaken the boat stand's construction.
  • Do not use boat stands to hold boats while in transit, such as on a truck or trailer. This is not safe, and your boat could be easily destabilized while moving.
  • Do not place blocks or any other item on top of a boat stand to increase it's reach. If your boat stand is not tall enough, please purchase a taller boat stand! It is not safe to try to increase the reach of your boat stands.
